BLAST @ Southend Adult Community College

Delivered by: Elevator Arts CIC
Funded by: Southend Education Trust Fund

In Spring 2023, Elevator Arts embarked on a transformative journey with Post-16 Special Educational Needs (SEN) learners at Southend Adult Community College.

The primary focus of the project was to enhance the overall wellbeing of these young people while fostering the development of their confidence, self-esteem, and communication and social skills. The journey began with encouragement, gradually leading the participants from apprehension to empowerment.

“One learner even said he would never have dared before to speak, let alone perform in front of such a crowd as he did yesterday!”

The team were impressed by the young people’s growth over the six weeks – from needing encouragement to engage with drama games to being self-assured and confident enough to create their own comedy improvisation show and perform in front of an audience.

“I enjoyed all of it. Taking part made me feel calm.”
– A Participant

“The investment from the Community Investment Board, funded by the Southend Education Trust, played an indispensable role in the success of our project. This support had a profound impact on both the project itself and the young participants involved. The investment facilitated the provision of essential resources, enabling Elevator Arts to deliver a comprehensive and high-quality project. Additionally, the financial support offered a sense of validation and importance to the young people involved. The impact of this investment extends beyond the duration of the project, as the skills, confidence, and self-esteem instilled in these students will continue to benefit them in their future endeavours, contributing to a more inclusive and empowered community.”
