Sunshine Baby Bank proudly launched its SEN Party Club in December 2023; an innovative after-school initiative hosted at Labyrinth House, Westcliff. Specifically designed for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), the club aims to offer an inclusive, sensory-friendly environment where every child feels welcome and valued.
The SEN Party Club features a series of thoughtfully organised activities, each tailored to cater to the unique needs of its attendees. From the exhilaration of a bouncy castle party to the wonder of a pet party, and from the creativity unleashed in Valentine’s arts & crafts to the fun and laughter of a face paint party, the club ensures a diverse and accessible experience for all. Emphasising softer music and low lighting, the environment is crafted to be comfortable for children with sensory processing disorders, thereby fostering a sense of belonging and joy.
Key to the club’s success is its emphasis on creating a ‘Safe Space’ for every child and family. A breakout room is available for those who need a quiet moment away from the festivities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the club on their own terms. Additionally, the provision of allergy-friendly party food and take-home party bags further exemplifies the club’s commitment to inclusivity and care for its participants.
Carmen Woods, the organiser of the SEN Party Club and a parent to a child with additional needs, shares her vision behind this remarkable project: “Our after-school ‘Party Club’ was set up to address the need that every child has to attend a party, regardless of their disability or additional needs. We wanted to create a club where children with additional needs would be able to join in and be themselves, as other children often do. The positive feedback from families, expressing their gratitude for providing a friendly and enjoyable space for their children, underscores the club’s impact on the community.“
This initiative has been made possible through the support of the Community Investment Board, ensuring that the SEN Party Club can continue to offer fortnightly gatherings during term time. It stands as a testament to the power of community, inclusivity, and the simple joy of celebration, tailored to meet the needs of all children.
