The Hive: Nature-Based Support for Families and Early Years Development
Delivered by: ATF
Funded by: Community Investment Fund
The Hive brings together three nature-based initiatives designed to support early childhood development, strengthen families, and improve community wellbeing in Southend. With support from the Community Investment Fund, ATF has continued to grow The Hive Nature
School into an inclusive and welcoming space where children and parents can connect, play, and learn together.
Funding has enabled 40 Leapsprogs sessions for toddlers, offering playful, exercise-based activities that boost physical, cognitive, and social development while providing a supportive environment for parents. Alongside this, 30 afterschool Nature Retreat sessions have given families a calm, nurturing space to relax, enjoy gentle activities, and spend quality time in nature. The grant has also supported Forest School training for two staff members, helping embed high-quality outdoor learning and ensuring long-term sustainability.
A Leapsprogs attendee shared: “I absolutely LOVE attending Leapsprogs at The Hive — it is the most magical space and my daughter loves the classes. I always feel so welcomed…My little girl loves petting the rabbit after sessions too — what a lovely way to spend a morning.”
ATF team member added: “The investment from CIB has had a huge impact. We’ve been able to continue our well-attended sessions, improve The Hive, and access excellent training. It’s a joy to work here — we’ve met so many wonderful families and built a supportive, connected community.
